The aim of this site is to provide a counter view to the ill informed internet site with a similar title to ours . Heaven only knows where they got some of their facts from . The structure of this site will loosely follow that of the other site .

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ( APEC ) Meeting in Sydney , Australia ( September , 2007 ) seems to have been the reason for the creation of the other site .

Make no mistake that what follows is not an attack on the US / Australia relationship , it is vital to Australia . Australia has fought alongside US forces in every conflict since Federation , the only country to do so . We invoked the ANZUS Treaty after 9/11 , although largely symbolic , we did sort out a few Taliban in Afghanistan . Unfortunately , since then both US and Australian administrations have lost the international plot and , no doubt , will pay the electoral price for this .

Australians will welcome any US President to Sydney , but , in the eyes of some , this welcome does not necessarily apply to President Bush . However , we should pay him the courtesy of hearing what he has to say .

The Australia , New Zealand , United States Security Treaty (ANZUS or ANZUS Treaty) is the military alliance which binds Australia and New Zealand and, separately, Australia and the United States to cooperate on defence matters in the Pacific Ocean area , though today the treaty is understood to relate to attacks in any area .

This site will not go into the pros and cons of New Zealand's actions in effectively withdrawing from ANZUS . If New Zealand was attacked by more than one war canoe , Australia would come to their aid . Their sporting teams are mostly our enemy .

The author of this list should go to Gettysburg on a summers day , say 4 July , stand where Lincoln stood on 19 November , 1963 and look out over the fields , graves and monuments . Next the text of Lincoln's speech ( any , or all of the five known versions ) should be read . Conclude this experience by considering how Lincoln reached out to the whole divided country on that day , contrast this with events of this Millennium .

There is a little historical rewriting going on here , not to mention the use of a rather interesting set of values and priorities .

Australia played a major role in the creation APEC , just as it had done with the formation of the United Nations . ( Until the last few years , Australia has been generally regarded as being an honest broker in world affairs . )

One would hope that not much time is spent on Iraq at the current meeting . Iraq is a stand alone disaster , it has needlessly tied down military forces which could be more usefully deployed elsewhere . Iraq has created a power vacuum , but it is a side show for the region .

Climate change belatedly became the theme for the present meeting , but now the spin doctors are reducing action commitments to motherhood statements . The US and Australia can no longer refuse to sign the Kyoto Protocol ( a minimalist position , anyway ) . Nor can they , and other countries continue to blame other regional countries , especially China , for greenhouse etc emissions which come from the production of goods exported the rest of the world . APEC should consider carbon taxes and members be prepared to act at Bali later this year .

There is a danger is that this meeting may sink into a talk fest , we hope that the " behind the scenes " work has already been done and will be acted on here in Sydney .

At least there will be the opportunity for leaders ( and their staff ) to meet , this should help when future regional problems arise . Remember that " Pacific " means " peace " .

For some time , both the Australian and NSW Governments have been raising the prospect of violent street protests . A 10 foot high fence bisects Sydney , exclusion zones , helicopters , riot squads and the police have even built a water canon ! Some official statements have been provocative , to say the least .

Despite what has been recently done to civil liberties in Australia , there still is a right to protest , provided it is peaceful . So far groups , such as stopbush2007 seem to have followed the rules and it does not seem balanced to have another group , which is pro Bush , allowed to set up shop outside his hotel ( in the exclusion zone ) . ( There is a further irony when this visit is compared with the Clinton visit of a few years ago ( he also stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel and was cheered my most of the substantial crowds at the time . ) )

Unfortunately meetings such as these do attract a loose coalition of groups and there are some ratbags amongst them . These serial protesters do little for their cause and , if they do use violence , they deserve their free holidays courtesy of the NSW Police .

It is worth noting that amongst a small group of the Australian population , there is a general anti American feeling . There are various reasons for this ( generally not well thought out ) . Further , there is some animosity over trade , especially farm subsidies and a perceived take over of Australian culture ( again generally not thought through , reverse examples are prominent Australians living in America ) . These sediments are not to be confused with the Australian tradition of " stirring " ( See An Aussie in America for an explanation of this and other terms . ) .

The Battle of the Coral Sea or the post war role of the US Navy in keeping the Pacific sea lanes open are useful topics to mention when discussing perceived anti Americanism in Australia . The point being that the US Navy stopped the Japanese invasion of Australia .
( A little history , the Japanese Southward advance in the Pacific was stopped by Australians at Milne Bay , the US Navy stopped them on the water in the Battle of the Coral Sea and destroyed their attack carriers at Midway . The Wikipedia links used here conveniently overlook the fact that the British had told Nimitz of the Japanese plans and probable locations . All WWII histories published prior to 1974 should be regarded as incomplete , see ULTRA SECRET and page 175 of the hardcover first edition of the book . )

We observed the main Park St protest held on 8 September . Maybe 3 - 4,000 ended up at Hyde Park , along with some 1,000 assorted Police and various State Government hangers on . ( Official estimates have been up to 10,000 ) . Most noticeably missing were the Moms and Dads similar events normally bring out . All the usual suspects were there ( see stopbush2007 ) , most of whom were incensed about matters not particularly relevant to APEC . We tried chatting to the ABC , Channel Nine and other media people about Australians for ANZUS but they weren't really interested . We got the impression that the other group had served it's news making purpose and that they ( the media ) had moved on .

POSTSCRIPT - On the way back , our camera person stopped to take a few photographs of the area where his car was broken into a few weeks ago . This sign was on the front of a terrace house , one of a row which , according to one resident ; " Had all been broken into in the past month . The Police know who is doing it but don't have the resources to get the evidence . " The word obscured by the branch is " ALL " :

The fake security ID worn by Chas Licciardello when the ABC television comedy show The Chaser breached the APEC security cordon in a fake motorcade, September 6, 2007.

This You Tube clip from The Chaser sets the scene for the fake motorcade , it was broadcast the previous evening in Australia . No doubt the video of the motorcade will also appear on You Tube .

( John Laws is a Sydney based " shock jock " , famously involved in the Cash For Comment Affair . The writer seems not to realise that there are a range of " issues " , involving a number of countries . China is now Australia's largest trading partner and Australia is caught between China on one hand and America , Japan and Taiwan on the other . Australia played a significant role in bringing China out from behind the Bamboo Curtain . There are a number of areas where China needs to improve , human rights , corruption , Tibet and treatment of the Phalon Gong movement among them . This is a hard task with the pace of internal change , which may be likened to trying to control herds of stampeding horses . )

G'day to you all, just wanted to drop you a note to express my absolute support in your endevours to let the world know that MOST Australians are not left wing loonies and Bush/Amercian haters and that we don remeber the sacrifices that the USA has made to protect our great nation in more than one war and still does today.. A mate of mine is a political cartoonists and because he isn't bent out of shape by the left wing donimated media he is having trouble breaking into mainstream media (surprise, surprise) although some regional papers have recently picked him up. Although he does try to stay objective he certainly isn't a bias to the left as mostly every editorial artist I have seen of late. ......................................................

There is the usual lack of distinction between the Bush administration ( which was punished in the recent US mid term elections and in current opinion polls ) and Americans in general .
